“Bop Duets,” written by Bugs Bower and edited by Steve Bulla, is my favourite jazz duet book of all time! It included thirty-eight duets in the bebop style to develop feeling for jazz phrasing and rhythms, independence in ensemble playing, and range.
Written for intermediate to advanced players, these duets have a wealth of wonderful musicality in them. Bower is known for his rhythmic etudes as well, and these bop duets with their counterpoint and syncopation push your reading to the limit while you are having the most fun you can possibly have with a trumpet in your hand.
The first set of duets in the book are long form duets, and the second half are shorter with chord symbols so you can improvise with your partner if you are so inclined. I have used these in performance, in master classes, in lessons with students of all ages, and at every trumpet hang I have had for the last 20 years. Having them on the store is an honour and I hope everyone gets a chance to try them.
