Suppli-bilities by William Vacchiano is subtitled “Advanced Technical Drills for Suppleness and Agility”. Editor Daren Wilkes writes:
In my first lesson with William Vacchiano at the Manhattan School of Music, he pointed to my trumpet case and said “that’s not a trumpet case you know”. My puzzled face prompted him to add, “It’s a toolbox!” He told me that, during my studies, I needed to gather and hone the skills or “tools” needed to compete in today’ s difficult performance world. His lessons and etudes are designed to strengthen common problem, areas and to promote fluency in different keys, styles and atiiculations.
The luxury of numerous rehearsals is no longer a reality in today’ s freelance environment. With financial uncertainty in the arts and budgets shrinking, performers are expected to be at performance level very quickly. Students must take advantage of all that these exercises have to offer and challenge themselves to meet the ever-growing demands of today’ s ensembles. Only the dedicated student with curiosity and experimentation will benefit fully from these crafted studies. A teacher is with you but a brief time each week, the rest is up to the student. As Mr. Vacchiano told me, “you never want to walk into a playing situation and not have the tools for the job” … always “be prepared.”
It was indeed a pleasure to work with my long-time teacher on this book and I hope it will be enjoyed by many.
