From the Forward:

David Berger is an extremely talented young composer, arranger, and trumpet player living and working in the New York Metropolitan area. I have known him for several years now, and our relationship has ranged from being my employer, when I played in his fine band, to that of being my student. Some time over the years, he has become my friend. Mr. Berger has written many kinds of music: scores for Broadway musicals and for motion pictures. He has written arrangements and original compositions for recordings, television commercials, publishers, dance groups and repertory orchestras. His primary interest, however, has always been jazz, and it is my belief that his name will some day be listed with the great names of this music. Mr. Berger has written arrangements and original compositions for many famous jazz artists, including Phil Woods, Roy Eldridge, Toots Thielmans, Jim Hall, Buddy DeFranco, Roland Hanna, Chick Corea, Bob James, Art Farmer and Arnie Lawrence. He has also written for the bands of Duke Ellington, Buddy Rich, Thad Jones-Mel Lewis, Clark Terry, Bill Watrous, Chuck lsraels’ National Jazz Ensemble, and the Lee Konitz Nonet. Mr. Berger is well known for his transcriptions of older jazz recordings. In addition to numerous solos, he has notated entire ensemble scores of Ellington, Basie, Monk, Parker, Ornette Coleman, etc., for the National Jazz Ensemble, Smithsonian Institution, Alvin Ailey Dance Theatre, and the New York Jazz Repertory Co. The recipient of three grants for jazz composition from the National Endowment for the Arts, Mr. Berger has still found the time to write for and direct his own 18-piece jazz orchestras since 1971. Many of the band’s arrangements are available by writing to Charles Colin Studios, 315 West 53rd Street, New York, NY, I 0019, where Mr. Berger is on the teaching faculty.
